2005 don Rodolfo Malbec 92 points and "Top 100 Best Values of the Year. "Cafayate's heights deliver intense sun and heat, which typically translates into rich, powerful reds. This one, however, seems to channel more of the area's cool nights in its subtle, spicy flavor. It's elegant and light, with strawberry and cherry flavors supported by firm tannins. It's impressively refined - especially at this price." --- Wine & Spirits, June 07

Intense red color with violet undertones. Very fruity on the nose, with hints of plums, spices and subtle notes of vanilla and toast from brief aging in French and American oak barrels. Good volume in the mouth, structured and with a well balanced finish.
  • Comments: Don Rodolfo 2005 Malbec was grown in the Cafayate Valley, one of the world's highest altitude viticultual regions. The Valley enjoys brilliant sunshine an average of 350 days each year. Exposure to intense solar ultraviolet radiation at high altitudes stimulates polyphenol synthesis in grapes, adding great complexity to the wines (as a bonus, polyphenols are believed to be responsible for the enhanced ability of wines made from high-altitude grapes to help prevent heart disease). Warm summer days offset by cool nights plunging by as much as 45°F. is key to Don Rodolfo wines, preserving acidity, enhancing richness of aroma/flavor, and increasing superior varietal expression.

The grapes of this wonderful wine are hand picked at the height of their expression, and then aged in stainless steel for 1 year. They are then put into American and French oak barrels for a short period before bottling.

This is an exceptional wine to pair with food from south of the border. So whether you pair it with Chili Rellenos or something more traditional like Empanadas share Don Rodolfo 2005 Malbec with friends and be well.
